Past and Present

Coal is a huge part of Appalachian culture.  It is the biggest industry east of the Mississippi.  However it is one of the dirtiest forms of energy that we now use in our country.  We have so many other ways to produce clean energy that we don't use, and I don't understand why.  We have technology to put solar panels into the roofs of our houses, people actually get stipends from the government each month because they produce more energy than they use.

We have the technology to use hydro powered cars as well.  A car that runs on water vapor and we don't harness this technology.  I believe the main reason we are not using this industry is because coal is just to powerful. Business runs this country, and because coal is a business they obviously run it as well.  To much money is shoveled into the coal industry and not enough funding is used for clean renewable energy.

  1. I'm glad you took a stance on the issue, but maybe you could have included some more details/facts about coal in Appalachia in order to set the stage for your opinion. My opinion is probably slightly uninformed, but I agree that coal has a ton of control on our economy because there are so many jobs at stake with coal production. I think that the production of clean energy cars, etc, might be stunted because only highly educated individuals will get the chance to design, develop, and make these cars. I think that we really need to be proactive with coal because someday, it'll all be gone. Your last paragraph was a nice analysis on our coal problem in America.
